LAWRENCEBURG TRI-KAPPA’S 100TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION LEADS TO PERPETUAL GIFT TO COMMUNITY
LAWRENCEBURG, IND., January 8, 2007 – The Pi Chapter of Kappa Kappa Kappa Inc. of Lawrenceburg turned 100 years old in May 2005. The result of that birthday celebration has led to the recent establishment of an endowment at the Dearborn Community Foundation, Inc., that will support Pi Chapter’s charitable causes in perpetuity.
The Lawrenceburg Tri Kappa Chapter recently contributed $7,500 to the Dearborn Community Foundation to establish the “Lawrenceburg Pi Chapter of Kappa Kappa Kappa Inc. Endowment Fund.” Investment income from the endowment benefits its many good works in the community.
“We plan to use the funds generated from the endowment to do Little Kindness’s for others in the community,” said Patti Bascom, Tri Kappa Adviser. “The use of the funds is in keeping with our purpose, which is to bring women into close, unselfish relationships for the promotion of charity, culture and education.”
Tri Kappa’s establishment of an endowment is a testament to its long-term commitment to its community, said Fred McCarter, Executive Director of the Dearborn Community Foundation. “Now, the good works completed by the members of this 101-year-old organization will live on for generations to come,” he said.
Tri Kappa is a unique philanthropic organization, founded in Indianapolis in 1901, and exists only within the boundaries of the State of Indiana. Across the state, the organization’s 147 Active and 123 Associate chapters complete special projects in their communities to promote charity, culture and education.
The Lawrenceburg Pi Chapter of Tri Kappa, the sixteenth chapter established, was founded on May 2, 1905. In 1995, in preparation for its 100th birthday in 2005, Lawrenceburg Tri Kappa members decided to invest $500 per year from their General Fund (funds procured from Tri Kappa members only and not from community projects) in a mutual fund for a gift to the community when the organization hit the century mark, Bascom said. “At the time, we really weren’t sure what we’d do with the $5,000-plus that we expected to have by 2005,” she said.
The organization’s members did decide, however, that they wanted to do something with the money that would “be around long after most of us were gone and that’s where the idea of the endowment was born,” Bascom said. “This gift is something that will live on in perpetuity, not tucked away in a closet or destroyed,” she continued.
Tri Kappa’s 2006 projects, including the Basket Bingo, Girls Night Out, Handmade Easter Eggs and a Golf Outing, were so successful, the organization decided to contribute additional funds to bring the initial endowment contribution to $7,500, Bascom said. “We are very proud that our hard work has led to this fund that will allow Tri Kappa ideals to benefit our community for many generations to come,” she added.
