This scholarship was established in memory of Byron Hartman, who was killed in an accident in July 2011 at the age of 24. At the time, Byron had just completed his first year of physical therapy school at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and it was apparent he would be very successful in the field.

Anyone who ever met Byron knew that he was a special person. In his 24 years, it was evident that he would spend his life helping people. He was always one to assist someone in the classroom or spend more time on the practice field to help his team get better. Byron was kind and humble. He could make you laugh. Everyone around him always seemed to have a good time. Byron made his friends, family, teammates, and peers better by making them stronger. His positive energy was apparent every day.

At East Central High School, Byron was a three sport varsity letter winner and an Honors graduate. This scholarship will be awarded to a student-athlete who demonstrates the same qualities that made Byron an excellent role model and friend. Byron’s spirit lives on in the people he helped and in every one of his friends and family members.

The Byron Hartman Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by a team of dedicated friends and family members to honor the work ethic that drove Byron every day and to engage the next generation of student-athletes.
